Story of My Book

Elite to Everyday Athlete is about the mental, emotional, and physical changes athletes go through after retiring from sports and how you can become champions in your next stage of life.

My name is Emily Coffman and I am the author of Elite to Everyday Athlete. I wrote this book because athletes get coached through every aspect of their career until retirement. After that, many athletes are left wondering “what’s next?”

My hope is that, in reading this book, you will discover that the glory days of being a competitive athlete are not behind you. In this book, I hope to instill in you the same sort of passion and excitement that I have for finding my competitiveness, drive, and purpose that I had in sports into every day life. Ultimately, I want you to see this book as a tool to help you transition out of an elite athlete into an everyday athlete.

In this book, you’ll learn about living a healthy lifestyle and finding your passion and purpose outside of sport. You’ll hear stories such as…

  • Retired NFL Quarterback Tony Romo finding love for a new sport and transferring his competitiveness onto the golf course.
  • Olympic athletes sharing their mental health struggles due to losing their identity and how they found healthy tools and coping strategies.
  • My own transition out of sport from being a coxswain who had to weigh 110 pounds for seven years to having to redefine what healthy meant when no longer restricted by a weight.

You will love this book if you identify as an athlete at heart, are looking for what’s next after sports, or want to help support any athlete you know in your life.

Elite to Everyday Athlete is a nonfiction book that speaks to current and former athletes who want to look at life after sport and a healthy lifestyle in a new way.

The Book – Elite to Everyday Athlete

The book is written in 3 parts.

Part 1 – The New Unknown contains the introduction + chapters 1 – 4. This part of the book goes into the psychology behind a retired athlete. The book details why slowing down is important and what changes to expect. You’ll learn why it’s similar to going through a grieving process and how to mentally prepare for these changes.

Part 2 – The Messy Middle contains chapters 5 – 7. Here, the book discusses letting go of the past. It includes how to redefine a healthy lifestyle, moving past your old athletic identity, and how to accept your body as it starts to go through changes. You will learn how to break out of the routine and mindset you’re used to.

Part 3 – Better Days Ahead contains chapters 8 – 11. This section focuses on turning from the past and looking into the future. It discusses how to structure your time, how to stay optimistic for the future, and how your athletic identity can stay part of your current lifestyle. You will learn how to find a passion and turn it into a new purpose.
